The Lyman E. Strong Papers are part of the larger Charles E. Frohman Collection. The collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by Mr. Frohman in 1967. The papers are stored with those of John H. James and William A. Townsend. .
Biographical Sketch
Lyman Elderkin Strong, son of Major Joseph Strong, was born June 13, 1802 in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York. Strong came to Ohio with his family in 1813. They settled in Lyme Township, Huron County Ohio, on land that later became known as Strong’s Ridge. Lyman married Calista L. Nims May 1, 1831. They were the parents of four children: William A., Henry C, Mrs. E. D. Lord, and Mrs. G. B. Spencer. Lyman opened a store with S. M. Robinson at Lyme, Ohio. He also served as postmaster of the at Lyme around 1836. Mr. Strong was described as “an unflinching, outspoken abolitionist at all times and an active participant in the operation of the Underground Railroad.” In 1846, Strong moved his family to Plymouth, Huron County, Ohio, where he remained until his death on October 8, 1889. He and his wife are buried in the Strong’s Ridge Cemetery, Lyme Township, Huron County, Ohio.
Scope and Content
The collection represents business correspondence of Lyman E. Strong during the years from 1836 to 1855 while living at Lyme and Plymouth, Ohio. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the correspondent. The inventory provides an item-level description of the correspondence.
