Hayes Presidential Library & Museums reaccredited, recognized as ‘good steward of its resources’

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums has been reaccredited, meaning it meets national standards and best practices for museums in the United States.

The American Alliance of Museums reaccredited the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums on Nov. 3. Accreditation lasts for 10 years.

“Through a rigorous process of self-assessment and review by its peers, the museum has shown itself to be a good steward of its resources held in the public trust and committed to a philosophy of continual institutional growth,” the Accreditation Commission wrote in a letter to the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.

AAM Accreditation Commission members visited the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums last year, met with staff members and reviewed procedures, programs and policies at the facility. It also met with community members at a restaurant in Fremont to discuss the public’s perception of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums and the facility’s impact on the surrounding area.

The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums was among the earliest museums to be accredited by AAM when the rigorous program was first started in the 1970s.

“It is an honor to be recognized as meeting such high standards, decade after decade,” said Christie Weininger, Hayes Presidential Library & Museums executive director. “Every aspect of our museum operations was reviewed as part of this process.  I’m so proud of our staff for their hard work each day along with the leadership of our board members, which is what made re-accreditation possible.”

The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner for the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is located at Spiegel Grove at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues.
