2017 Genealogy Class Schedule

          Learn to trace your family history, make a family tree, find details of your house’s past and more through genealogy classes offered at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums.

            The “Learning About Your Past” series classes cover a variety of topics and levels of genealogy. Becky Hill, head librarian at the Hayes Presidential Library and an experienced genealogist, leads theses classes.

            Times are 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $10 per person and can be paid the day of class or online at www.rbhayes.org.

The 2017 schedule of "Learning About Your Past" classes is as follows: 

Jan. 21 – Tracing Your House’s History – Head Librarian Becky Hill will explore the genealogy of a house. She will explain how to use printed and online sources to track the owners and history of a property through deeds, Sanborn Maps, city directories, tax records and other sources, highlighting, but not limited to, Sandusky County. March 4 – Free Genealogy Websites – Learn the basics of how to utilize free genealogical websites in family history research. Such internet sources as the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ Ohio Obituary Index, FamilySearch.org, Worldcat.org, Findagrave.com, EllisIsland.org and other popular websites will be explored in depth. April 1 – Ancestry.com & Paid Genealogy Websites – Learn how to make the most of the paid subscription sites available at the Hayes Presidential Presidential Library & Museums – Ancestry.com, HeritageQuest, Fold3; FindMyPast.com, MyHeritage.com, NewspaperArchives.com, NewEnglandAncestors.org and Archives.com. SPECIAL EVENT - Sunday, April 30 - Learn how to get the most out of RootsMagic Genealogy & Family History Software from the man who wrote it during a special workshop from 1 to 4 p.m.

RootsMagic Founder and President Bruce Buzbee will help participants with their genealogy questions and give an overview and demonstration of RootsMagic7. This event is free.

A schedule is as follows:

  • Noon to 1 p.m. p.m. – The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library will open for research and browsing.
  • 1 to 2:30 p.m. – Buzbee will present an overview and demonstration of RootsMagic7 with specific information on how to migrate your FamilyTreeMaker data to RootsMagic. He will also discuss how you will be able to use your personal Ancestry.com subscription in conjunction with RootsMagic.
  • 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. – Break
  • 2:45 to 4 p.m. – Question and answer session.
  • 5 p.m. – The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums close for the day.

May 13 – Make a Family Tree on Ancestry.com – Head Librarian Becky Hill and Dustin Austin will give an overview on how to create an online family tree with an Ancestry.com subscription.
