'The President's Own' performs in Spiegel Grove
'The President's Own' U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet helps welcome direct descendants of President Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes during the Celebrating Presidential Memories event Saturday, August 9 . The five members of the band - including Fremont native Amy Horn - present a free concert at 1 p.m. on the verandah of the Hayes Home.
Celebrating Presidential Memories is a one-time event that for the first time unites descendants of the Hayes and Webb families. The all-day activities also include free tours of historic sites on the grounds of Spiegel Grove, a free program about the Hayes family's genealogy (at 11:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m.), and a ticket-holders-only evening gala featuring Master of Ceremonies Dave Carlson of WTOL-TV. Guests at the gala are treated to food, refreshments, entertainment by the Phoenix Project Wind Quintet, and a never-before-seen video compilation of Hayes family movies and photographs (prior to 1940). In addition, gala attendees have unprecedented access to members of the Hayes and Webb families - affording a chance to talk with members of a presidential family!
The U.S. Marine Band is better known as The President's Own. Formed in 1798, by an Act of Congress, it is the oldest professional musical organization in the nation. Its primary mission is to provide music for the President of the United States. The talented musicians that serve in the band must meet the high standards of musicianship set down by the group's 17th director, John Philip Sousa.
