An account of a near tragedy that occured in 1789 at Spiegel Grove. The story was a favorite of President Hayes, who delighted in relating the tale to new visitors. The tree to which Ms. Fleming was tied was located just inside the entrance gates to Spiegel Grove on the north side of the driveway. The tree no longer exists, but the large stone pictured below now marks the spot.
