Re-creating the Hayes Home's history

The replica of the light fixture in the Library begins with brass pipe and sheets of brass.
One of the experts helping with the historically-accurate restoration of seven areas inside the Hayes Home is Daniel W. Mattausch. Mr. Mattausch is a preservation consultant for historic lighting. His business, The American Gas Light Gallery, is located in Washington, D.C.
For months now, Mr. Mattausch has been busy re-creating the original light fixture that was located above President's Hayes' desk in the Library of the Hayes Home. Mattausch has been using period photographs provided by the Center and details from 19th century lighting catalogs to create the ceiling fixture.

These photographs reveal the painstaking process involved.

A finial is created on a lathe. Decorative elements of the fixture are welded.

Pieces of the light are laid out in preparation for assembling.

All that is needed now are the glass globes and electrification.
