Quest for Civil Rights:
The 50th Anniversary of the Fremont Chapter NAACP

on exhibit February 24-June 24

The significance of its creation in 1909 - the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth - directed the purpose of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Just as President Lincoln waged war to ensure the Declaration of Independence's pledge that “all men are created equal,” the NAACP continues to battle for the Civil Rights of Americans of African descent.

In celebration of the golden anniversary of the Fremont Chapter of the organization, the Center hosts Quest for Civil Rights: The 50th Anniversary of the Fremont NAACP. Conceptualized by chapter historian Dr. Alvin Jackson and developed in partnership with Center staff, the exhibit is on display Feb. 24-June 24. Quest for Civil Rights relates a history of the Fremont chapter, as well as that of the national organization. Topics include Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and lynching; events leading to Civil Rights legislation; and local NAACP leaders.
