Introduction

The William Dean Howells holdings were acquired by gift and purchase by the Hayes Presidential Center in 1969. The Hayes Presidential Center also holds two rolls of microfilm of The Domestic Life of William Dean Howells by Elizabeth Howells. The correspondence of the late Watt Marchman (a past director of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center) regarding the Howells manuscript material is described below. It may be found in the Center's Biographical File: Howells, William Dean.

Biographical Sketch

Born in 1837 in Martin's Ferry, Ohio, William Dean Howells was the second son of William Cooper Howells, a anti-slavery journalist. As a boy, Howells set type in his father's printing office. From 1856 to 1861, he served as a reporter and editorial writer for Columbus' Ohio State Journal. At the age of twenty-two, Howells published a book of poems with friend John J. Piatt. Although a commercial failure, five selections were published by the Atlantic Monthly. Appointed consulate of Venice by Lincoln, Howells resided in Italy throughout the Civil War. Returning to America in 1865, Howells joined the staff of E. L. Godkin's Nation and later, became an editor of the Atlantic Monthly. His association with the Atlantic Monthly continued for fifteen years (1866-1881). In 1871, he became editor-in-chief of the publication. As poet, novelist, editor, and literary critic, Howells rejected sentimental romanticism in favor of critical realism. In close association with Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Hamlin Garland, Henry James, and others, he became a literary-groundbreaker, presenting a more truthful view of human behavior and America's middle class in much of his work. A prolific author throughout his life, Howells published over one hundred volumes of poetry, fiction, plays, autobiography, and criticism. His novel, A Hazard of New Fortunes, was probably the height of his development of literary realism. As Howells advanced realism as a literary form, he turned increasingly to social reform.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the collection contains the correspondence of William Dean Howells dating from 1857 to1918, with members of his family; with Rutherford B. Hayes and members of his family; and with literary friends and acquaintances. The collection also contains miscellaneous letters about Howells. Letters relative to his family include correspondence (1856-1886) with his father, William Cooper Howells, editor of the Ashtabula Sentinel, and U. S. Consul in Quebec and Toronto, Canada; correspondence (1863 to 1909) with his brother Joseph A. Howells. Included in the Joseph A. Howells letters are many political and business letters from other than W. D. Howells. The collection also contains letters of Elinor Mead Howells (Mrs. W. D. Howells); incoming correspondence to William. Dean Howells II (1912-1918), and typed copies of correspondence of William. Dean Howells II relative to Howells family genealogy (1945 to1948); Civil War letters written to his sister Annie Howells Frechette (1861 to1864); negative photostats of letters of Richard S. Hinton to Aurelia and Victoria Howells (1861 to1862); and Matthew Markland correspondence (1895 to1900).

Also part of this collection are original manuscripts of William. Dean Howells. Among them are "Novel-writing and novel-reading" (96 pp.) and a tribute to his brother; original manuscripts of William Cooper Howells "Doctrine of Atonement" and Origin of Evil;" original manuscripts "The Domestic Life of William Dean Howells" by Mrs. Joseph A. Howells; original manuscripts "A Morning's Ride" by Joseph Howells. There are also negative photostats and miscellaneous clippings of family interest; photographs of William Dean Howells and members of his family, his birthplace, home, and study and library in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There is one box containing correspondence of R. Reid Coleman with various collectors in acquiring his William Dean Howells collection.
