The Thomas H. Langlois Collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by his daughters: Elmira Marina (Mrs. Howard Conklin), Sarah Zoe (Mrs. Titchener), and Esther Ferdina (Mrs. Daniel Stewart), Florence Dhelve Langlois, and Caroline Legette Langlois.
Thomas Huxley Langlois, son of Arsene F. Langlois (1864- ), a Canadian immigrant, and Tirey Mosher (1869-1938) was born and reared at Detroit, Michigan. Following graduation from Detroit's Eastern High School, Langlois attended the University of Michigan where he received his B.S. (1924) and M.S. (1925). He later attended Ohio State University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1935. For the next twenty years, Dr. Langlois served as an Associate Director and then Director of the Franz Theodore. Stone Laboratory located on Gibraltar Island just across the harbor from Put-in-Bay (South Bass Island) in Lake Erie. The laboratory, owned by Ohio State University, conducts research and offers courses involving aquatic biology, geology, ecology, and entomology associated with freshwater systems. In addition to his research work, Dr. Langlois was an avid photographer who was interested in all areas of South Bass Island life. He published numerous articles concerning the natural phenomena as well as the social and historical aspects of the island. Images from his extensive photographic collection frequently accompanied his published works. In 1956, Dr. Langlois returned to the university campus in Columbus, but retained ownership of several island properties. He and his wife Marina (Holmes) were the parents of five daughters.
The collection consists of some 17,000 negatives, prints, and 4" X 6" cards that, through Langlois' numbering system, identify and describe the images. While Dr. Langlois' negatives contain images which reflect his varied interests (e.g. a trip to the Far East and Australia, the cornerstones of public buildings in Ohio, candid views of family and friends), the majority of subjects pertain directly to his profession as a biologist. They span the years from 1935 to 1968. The file yields views of ice formations, Lake Erie shorelines, dry creek beds, swamp flora, geological anomalies (e.g. a stalagmite poking above the level of a pond), and similar views taken on and around the Lake Erie Islands. Approximately 2400 of these images focus on the residents, buildings, shoreline, harbor, commercial fishing and other activities of South Bass Island.
Field notes; drafts of published articles; island sociological data; newspaper clippings, brochures, and post cards of vessels that plied the waters off the Lake Erie Islands; annotated lists of birds of South Bass; genealogical research on eighteenth century military explorer, Le Vicomte Chausegros De Lery; miscellaneous pamphlets and booklets; Stone Laboratory reports and copies of island- related historical manuscripts accompany the images.
