Introduction

The John Brown, Jr., Papers are part of the Charles E. Frohman Collection.

Biographical Sketch

Born in 1821 at Hudson, Ohio, John Brown, Jr., was the eldest son of abolitionist John Brown, Sr. John Jr., worked with his father for the Perkins and Brown Company selling wool in Akron, Ohio, and Springfield, Massachusetts. He married Wealthy Hotchkiss, whom he met at the Grand River Institute in Austinburg, Ohio. John Jr., his brothers, and at least one sister played some part in their father’s "anti-slavery cause." With his brother Owen, John Jr., moved to Osawatomie, Kansas, in 1855. He was a member of the first Territorial Executive Committee in Kansas and elected to the legislature in 1856. John Jr., accompanied by his father, led a group of militia to the relief of Lawrence, Kansas after it had been "sacked’ by a pro-slavery force. He served as Agent of Emigration for the British North American Provinces in 1860-1861, where he labored on behalf of African Americans as well as Native Americans. Resigning his position in 1861, John Jr., joined the Kansas Brigade in the Civil War. Later, in 1861, illness forced him to resign his captaincy in the Union Army. Just as brothers Jason and Salmon and brother-in-law Henry Thompson refused to participate in the Harper’s Ferry Raid, so did John, Jr. Their refusal to fight at Harper’s Ferry created a conflict for the Brown family in later years. Only by reshaping the family’s history were they able to justify their absence at Harper’s Ferry and at the same time defend their father and his antislavery cause.

In 1862, John Brown, Jr., purchased a ten-acre plot on the south shore of South Bass Island at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. His sister Ruth and her husband Henry Thompson also settled at Put-in-Bay. Shortly after John Brown, Sr.’s, execution in 1859, Owen Brown, who had participated in the raid at Harper’s Ferry, escaped to Put-in-Bay where he remained for twenty years. Owen lived in a small cabin on his brother’s land; he spent the winter months on nearby Gibraltar Island serving as the caretaker of Jay Cooke’s summer home.

John, Jr., remained on the island until his death in 1895. He farmed, harvested grapes, practiced surveying, taught science and mathematics to the islanders, and lectured on temperance and slavery. During the Civil War, Brown warned the Union troops on Johnson’s Island of the impending raid to free Confederate officers imprisoned there. Later, he organized a militia company to assist in the defense of the island. He filled his home with memorabilia of Kansas and his father and defended John, Sr.’s, character against all public criticism.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of letters written to John Brown, Jr., between the years 1857 and 1895. It contains some political comments, a small amount of Civil War material, and a few business papers. The Brown family was among the earliest pioneers of Kansas and therefore much involved in its early history as noted in the Kansas Historical Society correspondence. There is considerable reference to the sacrifice of the Brown family in the cause of abolishing slavery. Letters mention the financial distress of the family and efforts to assist them; the gold medal presented to the widow of John Brown, Sr., as tribute to the memory of her husband; and reference to a painting and a statue of John Brown, Sr.

Some important correspondents include Jay Cooke, Richard J. Hinton, Wendell Phillips, James Redpath, Gerrit Smith, and Pillsbury Parker as well as a few letters to Franklin B. Sanborn.
