Introduction

The Edmund Willson Roberts Collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 2006 by William N. Bumiller. Boxes 10 through 14 of the Reinhardt N. Ausmus Collection (FR – 1) contain extensive materials about the Roberts Motor Company during its years in Sandusky, Ohio.  Additional materials were given in 2008.

Biographical Sketch

Edmund Willson Roberts was born in 1866 to Robert Ross and Mary (Foote) Roberts.  His mother died in 1870 and his father in 1875, at which time Roberts was sent to live with his grandfather in Geneva, New York.  In 1880, he spent a year out west as a cattle rancher on his uncle’s ranch, 14 miles east of Sterling, Colorado.  He then attended Cornell University and was due to graduate with a Master’s in Engineering in 1894, but his graduation was delayed due to a bout with typhoid-malaria.  While taking a break from his studies, Roberts traveled to England to be the personal assistant to Sir Hiram Maxim, who was performing experiments in aviation.  Roberts stayed with Maxim for eight months, and on July 31, 1894, he witnessed the first powered flight in history when Maxim flew a short distance in a steam-powered plane.  In the fall of 1894, Roberts traveled to Germany—twelve miles from Berlin—to watch Otto Lillienthal experiment with glider flight.  Roberts then returned to Cornell and graduated in 1895, the topic of his thesis being aviation.

Shortly after leaving Cornell, Roberts joined the writing staff of International Correspondence Schools, writing a textbook on engine design.  In 1903, he became a mechanical engineer for Elmore Manufacturing Company, an automobile manufacturing corporation in Clyde, Ohio.  He then moved to Sandusky, Ohio, and established the Roberts Motor Company, where he designed and manufactured engines for boats and airplanes.  Notably, the first parachute jump in history (March 12, 1912) was made from an airplane using a Roberts motor; Capt. Bert Berry made the jump and Anthony Jannus piloted the craft.  Financial difficulties, however, forced Roberts to leave the company in 1914.  During World War I, he served as a consulting engineer for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in Washington (1918-1919).

From 1900 to1902, and again from 1915 to1923, Roberts was the editor of Gas Engine Magazine, published in Cincinnati.  Although the magazine dissolved in 1923 with the death of its owner, Roberts stayed in Cincinnati for the rest of his life.  He worked mainly as a freelance consulting engineer, designing different engines for a wide range of clients.  He designed a total of 131 engines in his life.  For a time, Roberts also worked as a patent developer, helping to secure patents for the inventions of others.

Besides engineering, Roberts was also an avid writer, having articles published in magazines such as Rudder, Automobile Magazine, Motor Boat, Motor Boating, Power Boating, and Aviation, among others.  He had eight books published, including the “Gas Engine Handbook”.  Besides technical works, Roberts also wrote and sold greeting card verses and short fiction stories, which was a less successful enterprise for him.  His wide and varied interests also included telepathy, on which he wrote an article for Cosmopolitan in 1899.

Roberts married Lena Isabelle Norton (Belle) on 30 March 1896.  The couple had three children:  Ruth, Betty, and Edmund Willson Jr.  Belle passed away in November of 1939 at the age of 59.  Roberts died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Cincinnati on March 14, 1947; he was 80 years old.

Scope and Content

This collection spans primarily from 1930 to 1945, but does contain items dating as early as 1917.  It includes mainly business correspondence, although a few personal letters are present as well.  Some of the correspondence is with businesses and individuals relating to Roberts’s engine design and patent services, as well as with publishing companies to which he was trying to sell his work.

The collection is arranged alphabetically, generally by the name of the company. Items preceded by an asterisk (*) include a pamphlet, brochure, publicity materials, price list, or other items of that nature. The correspondence is in a poor state of preservation.

The collection contains seven published works, of which all but one was written by Roberts.  A part of this collection is the schematic drawings of E. W. Roberts’s gasoline engines for marine and automotive use.  Schematics of turbines, steering mechanisms, ignitions, carburetors, dynamos, brakes, cylinder gaskets, and pistons—designed by Roberts during his years as a consulting engineer—also are included.
