The Dayton Daily News
debuted on 22 August 1898 at the hands of publisher James M. Cox. It prided itself on mass appeal, focusing on
such issues as women’s issues and stock market quotes. The newspaper also utilized photographs and
took advantage of the Associated Press wire service. Cox also expanded delivery of the newspaper
into surrounding areas such as
The Canton Daily News, established in June 1833, is perhaps most well-known for its editor from 1925 to 1926, Donald Ring Mellett. When Mellett accepted an offer to edit the Canton, Ohio, newspaper in January 1925, it was lagging behind the leading Canton newspaper of the time, The Repository, with circulation at only half that of its rival. Mellett changed the focus of the newspaper to combating local corruption, and took an interest in politics by having the paper support a Democratic candidate for mayor. Mellett’s articles on the homicide of a local “underworld” individual, however, and his printed accusations of the murderer, led to his own assassination in 1926. A year later, the Canton Daily News received a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its work in fighting corruption; Mellett was posthumously recognized for his personal sacrifice. Without its determined editor, however, the paper once again began to decline and was bought out by The Repository shortly thereafter.
