Introduction

 

The Sandusky County, Ohio Photograph Collection is an artificial collection composed of images donated at various times through the years.

 

Formation of Sandusky County, Ohio

 

Sandusky County, Ohio, was part of the large Indian territory established in northwestern Ohio by the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.  Within this territory the Indians gave to the federal government for military use a tract of land two miles square at the first rapids of the Sandusky River.  This land, known as the Two Mile Square Reserve, is now occupied by the city of Fremont and was originally known as Lower Sandusky.  In January 1815, the Ohio legislature established Huron County, formed from the Firelands - the west end of the Connecticut Western Reserve.  For governmental purposes, this act attached to Huron County lands adjoining it on the west, including the Two Mile Square Reserve.

 

In January 1820, the Ohio legislature established Sandusky County.  Seneca County was set up at the same time and attached to Sandusky County for governmental purposes.  The two counties were surveyed into sections by the federal government this same year, 1820.

 

In April, 1824, county government was set up in Seneca County, and Sandusky County=s jurisdiction ended over that area.  In 1835, in the heat of the Ohio-Michigan dispute known as the Toledo War, Lucas County was hastily formed to occupy the disputed land.  The northwest tip of Sandusky County claimed by Michigan was made part of Lucas County.  This is the land directly north of present Ottawa County.

 

In 1838, the Seneca Indians sold their reservation to the federal government and moved west.  These lands, lying partly in Ballville and Green Creek townships, were surveyed the same year and placed on sale.  Also, in May 1838, Erie County was set off from Huron County, and the northeastern tip of Townsend Township added to it.  In 1840, Ottawa County was set off from Sandusky County.  In establishing the county line, Rice and Woodville Townships were formed. 

 

Sandusky Township was formed in 1815; Townsend in 1820; Ballville, York, and Green Creek in 1822; Riley in 1824; Jackson in 1829; Washington in 1830; Scott and Madison in 1833; and Woodville and Rice in 1840.  Fremont is the county seat.  Other Sandusky County towns and villages include Clyde, portions of Bellevue, Burgoon, Millersville, Helena, Rollersville, Hessville, Woodville, Gibsonburg, Lindsey, Green Springs, and Vickery.

 

Scope and Content

 

The Sandusky County, Ohio Photograph Collection contains more than 3,000 prints, photographs, and drawings dating from 1850 to 1984.  Nearly every photographic process is represented in the collection.  Images from Sandusky County=s towns and villages are included in this collection, however, the collection is dominated by pictures taken in and around Fremont, Ohio.  The photographs are arranged according to subject.  Some of the subjects include Sandusky County=s towns and villages, events and celebrations, buildings, businesses, residences, schools, organizations, street scenes, bridges, railroads, churches, and utilities.  The numbers appearing in parentheses after the subject in this finding aid indicate the number of photographs.
