Biographical Sketch

Ada Rice, daughter of Dr. Robert H. and Cynthia (Fry) Rice, was born May 6, 1874. Ada had one sister, Anna (Rice) Pero, and one brother, Henry Caldwell Fry Rice. A life-long resident of Fremont, Ohio, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Women’s Auxiliary, the Sandusky County Historical Society, and the Women’s Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital. Ada was one of the original stockholders in the Colonial Savings Bank & Trust Co., a bank her brother-in-law helped organize. She was also active in the local Republican Party and served as a judge of elections at the polls for many years. Ada Rice died January 20, 1966, the last member of her family, leaving one half of her estate to the Presbyterian Church and the other half to Memorial Hospital of Sandusky County.

Scope and Content

The majority of this collection consists of correspondence to Ada Rice from family members and friends. Several of the correspondents address her as "Posy" and tell of family matters and other aspects of daily life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ada’s involvement with the local Republican Party is evident after 1920 and some of these letters deal with candidates asking for votes or other support. There are several folders with financial papers including household bills, bank statements, and corporate meetings and stock notices. There are also fund raising kits from World War II for War Bond Sales and the Red Cross as well as diaries for the years 1937 and 1938.
