The Pohlman material was donated to the Center by descendants of the family.
Charles F. Pohlman, a native of Germany, was a pioneer resident of Sandusky County who emigrated from Germany in 1845. He first settled in Perrysburg, Ohio, where he married Adeline Belanger. The union was blessed by five children: Mrs. Frank Sellars, Mrs. C. P. Bliss (Cora), Charles F., Jr., Alex, and William. Before settling in Fremont, Polhman was a stage coach driver making regular runs between Perrysburg, Fremont, Tiffin, Monroeville, and other towns in the vicinity of the Maumee and Western Reserve Turnpike. After retiring from his job as sheriff, Charles Sr. served as justice of the peace for Sandusky Township. His son, Charles F. Jr., succeeded his father as sheriff, serving from 1882-1886. The elder Pohlman was a mason and a member of the Ft. Stephenson Lodge in Fremont. After the death of his wife in 1889, Charles Pohlman lived with his children, especially Mrs. Cliff P. Bliss of Fremont.
This collection contains material pertaining to Charles F. Pohlman, Jonathan Bliss, and Alonzo Pangburn, all related by marriage. Of special interest in the collection are documents relating to Pohlman’s role as sheriff of Sandusky County from 1878 to 1882 and his duties as justice of the peace for Sandusky Township after 1882. Registers of jail fees from June 24, 1878 to April 3, 1882, are available as well as documents pertaining to the hanging of a convicted murderer named John Welch (or Welsh).
Most of the material relating to Bliss pertains to improvements he made to milling equipment while a resident in Dundee, Michigan. Jonathan Bliss married the daughter of Alonzo Pangburn, at Erie, Michigan on September 30, 1860. Their son, Cliff P. Bliss married Cora Pohlman, the daughter of Charles F. and Adeline Pohlman. During his early career, Alonzo Pangburn was involved in business in the Cleveland area. He later resided in Dundee, Michigan. In 1868 he and T. S. Stewart formed a partnership in Stewart’s Toledo Scales Works, Toledo, Ohio. A resident of Sandusky County, Mr. Pangburn died on November 8, 1891 from injuries received in a train accident.
