Introduction

The collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by Norma Eaton in 2000.

Agency History

The United States federal government began granting military benefits to American war veterans and their families in 1789. Records concerning veterans’ benefits are held by the National Archives. Information varies for individual veterans depending on the Congressional act under which the veteran sought relief. The veteran’s name, military or naval unit, date and place of enlistment and discharge, residences since discharge, and service-related disabilities are frequently given. Birth date and place, date of marriage, wife’s maiden name, names and birth dates of children, and subsequent marriages are other data that often appear in records.

Scope and Content

The collection includes photocopies of veterans’ records of benefits held by the National Archives for seventy-six military veterans who, at some point in their lives, resided in Ottawa County, Ohio. The photocopies of the individual records were acquired as part of the Ottawa County Genealogical Society’s efforts to identify Ottawa County veterans who served prior to 1900. Many of the records are incomplete. The bulk of the records are for Union veterans of the Civil War; however, there are several records for Ottawa County veterans who served in the War of 1812, War with Mexico, and the Spanish American War. The collection also contains a file of miscellaneous data on several Ottawa County, Ohio families.
