Introduction
The
records of the Oak Harbor Conservation Club, Inc. are donated to the Hayes Presidential Center on an
annual basis.
Agency History
The
Oak Harbor Conservation Club was formed July 11, 1946 with the purpose to promote hunting and
fishing, encourage the appreciation of outdoor activities, support land and
water conservation methods, and foster a cooperative relationship between
hunters and farmers. The club was incorporated August 18, 1948.
The
club has occasionally purchased nearby tracts of land to better provide
adequate hunting and fishing opportunities for the members. Members have also built dikes along creeks,
erected nesting structures for birds, planted trees, and set up rifle ranges.
The
club supports local conservation efforts through annual contributions to the
Ottawa County Soil & Water Conservation office and offers a scholarship to
college and graduate students in the field of Natural
Resources-Conservation. The members
provide educational opportunities to
area youth by giving away fishing rods, conducting safe hunting programs, and
teaching responsible shooting techniques at the organization=s rifle range.
Scope and Content
The
bulk of this collection is made up of a complete set of minutes of the regular
meetings and trustee meetings from the club=s
formation to the present day. These
minutes provide details of the many different activities conducted by the club
including fishing derbies, trap shoots, educational
programs (for both the members and the community), and work projects. Other items found in this collection include
newspaper clippings, photographs, treasurer=s
reports, tax returns, and the organization=s
constitution and by-laws.
