Introduction

Paul Buskirk of Tiffin, Ohio donated the Holtz Strong Family Collection in 2001. Related family material appears in LH 261 Jacob Souder Holtz Collection

Biographical Sketch

Jacob and Susanna Feaga Holtz moved their family from Frederick County, Maryland, to Seneca County, Ohio, in 1834.  Their son Jacob Philip Holtz and his wife Susannah Huss Holtz bought a farm in Pleasant Township, Seneca County, Ohio, in 1840.  Jacob Philip and Susanna Feaga Holtz had three sons: Jacob Souder, Charles David, and John.  Jacob Souder was born in 1842 and died July 1, 1864 in Fort Strong Hospital in Virginia.  He had enlisted in Company H, 164th Ohio National Guard May 2, 1864.  Charles David Holtz (1846-1937) married Lillie Smith October 8, 1872.  He and his wife and daughter lived in Seneca County.  The third son, John (1850-1918) married Lucinda Bell Corthell (1856-1889) in 1883.  Lucinda was one of eight children of George (1815-1882) and Susan Engler (1820-1882) Corthell.  John and Lucinda inherited the Holtz farm and were living there when their daughter Fannie was born February 20, 1885.  In September 1887, John and Lucinda traveled by train west seeking a more healthful climate for Lucinda, who had contracted tuberculosis.  Daughter Fannie was left with Lucinda's sister Francis (Fannie) Corthell Strong in Kenton, Ohio.  John and Lucinda stayed in Columbus, Nebraska, from September 1887 to January of 1888.  John's cousin, L. J. Cramer, was a school principal in Columbus, Nebraska.  Mr. Cramer later became a county superintendent of public education.  From January to May of 1888, John and Lucinda lived in Atkinson, Nebraska, a town farther west and north of Columbus.  They returned to Seneca County, Ohio, in May 1888.  Lucinda died in May 1889.  John Holtz, described as a successful and progressive farmer, managed the Holtz family's 380-acre farm.  He was elected trustee for Pleasant Township, Seneca County, Ohio, in 1901.  John Holtz died in 1901.

Scope and Content

The Holtz Strong family correspondence contains approximately 250 items, nearly all of which are personal letters exchanged between family members and friends.  Paul Buskirk, the donor of the collection, is the son of Dorsey Rosenburger Buskirk and Fannie Holtz Buskirk and the grandson of John Holtz and Lucinda Corthell Holtz.  John and Lucinda Holtz are the authors or recipients of most of the correspondence in the collection.

The bulk of the Holtz Strong collection is letters dated from September 22, 1887 to February 21, 1889.  The majority of the letters was written between October 1887 and April 1888, and these were sent from Ohio to Nebraska.

Among Holtz family members approximately 76 letters were sent from John's brother Charles, mother, and niece.  Among Corthell family members approximately 66 letters were written by Lucinda's brothers Lem, Will, and George Albert.  Fannie Corthell Strong, Lucinda's sister, sent approximately 55 letters.  Lucinda sent approximately 74 letters to her sister Fannie and daughter Fannie, who was staying with Fannie Corthell Strong and her husband A. A. Strong in Kenton, Ohio.

The Holtz letters detail farm concerns and local events.  Letters between sisters Lucinda Holtz and Fannie Strong exchange questions and reports about little Fannie Holtz.  Fannie Strong included some fabric scraps in two letters, and there were many references to portraits taken, sent, and received.  Nearly every letter mentioned Lucinda's health, which seems to have improved during her stay in Nebraska.

The Holtz Strong Family Correspondence Collection also includes a small number of published items such as advertisements, promotional materials, and railway timetables.
