Introduction

This collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 2005. The surnames included in the inventory of this finding aid also appear in the Hayes Obituary Index and can be accessed online at www.rbhayes.org/index.

Biographical Sketch

Born and raised in Niagara County, New York, Rebecca B. Hill attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio. After graduation, she attended the University of Michigan, where she received an MLS degree. Ms. Hill was employed at the Tiffin Seneca County Public Library from 1976 - 1984. Since 1984, she has been employed at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, where she currently (2005) holds the position of Head Librarian. She is a founding member of the Seneca County Genealogical Society, a lifetime member of the Wilson, New York Historical Society, a member of the Sandusky County Genealogical Society, and a former trustee and Fellow of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Her interest in genealogy developed in the early 1970s. From 1978 to 1998 she performed research for those interested in ancestors who lived in Seneca, Wyandot, Crawford, and Sandusky counties of Ohio.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of genealogical materials compiled by Ms. Hill from 1978 to 1998, while researching for clients seeking ancestors in Seneca and surrounding counties of Northwest Ohio. The bulk of the material reflects her research on more than 250 families in Seneca, Sandusky, Crawford, and Wyandot counties. The materials originally served as a reference file for Ms. Hill. It includes her correspondence with clients and photocopies of material prepared by her for clients. Types of records included in the collection are genealogical charts, obituaries, census records, land records, government documents, and cemetery listings.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the family. Because Ms. Hill's work was dictated by the needs and interests of individual clients, the amount of material assembled on each family varies from a few documents to several hundred pages. In the case of extensive research, the materials may extend to several file folders.
