Introduction

The records were acquired from Jack D. Zink, president of the association, following the culmination of the activities associated with the event. For information on other earlier celebrations of the event, consult the Center's Local History File. All artifacts received have been transferred to the Center's museum.

Agency History

July 27 through August 3, 1963 marked the official celebration and commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the War of 1812's Battle of Fort Stephenson. The site of the battle later became the city of Fremont, Ohio. Residents and descendants of the soldiers who had defended the fort against the English troops and Native Americans established the tradition of celebrating the victory each August. In 1963, Sandusky County officials organized a week-long, county-wide commemoration of the event that included service organizations, public officials, residents, school children, and merchants. Jack D. Zink presided over the association formed to organize the event.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of the administrative and financial records generated by Jack Zink during the organization of the event, including correspondence, committee reports, receipts, schedules, and printed material. Zink's records are complemented by those of committee members as well as other officers of the association. Memorabilia, photographs, and news clippings associated with the celebration provide detailed information of the scheduled events on a daily basis.
