Introduction

As chairman of the Fremont, Ohio Sesquicentennial Written History Committee, Roger Bridges, director of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, donated the committee’s records to the Hayes Presidential Center in 2000.

Agency History

Throughout the 1999 year, Fremont, Ohio celebrated the 150th anniversary of the community’s renaming. Originally known as Lower Sandusky, Ohio, residents officially changed the town’s name to Fremont, Ohio, in 1849. As part of the celebration, a Written History Committee was formed. Headed by Roger Bridges, director of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, the committee’s purpose was to compile and publish histories of Fremont’s civic organizations, churches, families, and individuals. The final product, Fremont Sesquicentennial Scrapbook, is a 144-page book containing numerous historic photographs and a compilation of histories of many of the city’s organizations and residents The committee was also charged with producing a souvenir program to be published in the Fremont News Messenger during the final month of the celebration.

Scope and Content

The records are those of Roger Bridges, head of the Written History Committee of the Fremont Sesquicentennial Committee. The bulk of the collection represents the committee’s monthly meeting minutes and the organizational and personal histories submitted to the committee for publication.

The histories are arranged alphabetically by name. A copy of the final work is also included.
