Additional information on Samuel Brinkerhoff can be found in the Mary Miller Hayes Collection, the Webb C. Hayes Collection, Pemiscott Land and Cooperage Collection, and the Frances Schwartz Collection.

Biographical Sketch

Samuel Brinkerhoff, son of Abraham Brinkerhoff, was born in Phelps, New York in 1856. Following the death of his father in 1870, Brinkerhoff attended school in Hillsdale, Michigan. Three years later, he moved to Willoughby, Ohio where he worked as a clerk for Burr & Bates, a drug and grocery store. By 1876, Brinkerhoff had joined relatives in Fremont, Ohio where he taught school for several years before reading law with the firm of Bartlett & Finefrock. In 1880, he was elected justice of the peace for the city of Fremont, and the following year was admitted to the bar before the Supreme Court of Ohio. Two years later, Brinkerhoff became the Democratic candidate for mayor of Fremont. Although, he lost the election, Brinkerhoff succeeded in his bid for probate judge of Sandusky County, Ohio in 1896. Brinkerhoff became an early partner in a local farm implement company known as the Ohio Cultivator Co. His investments and his law practice provided Brinkerhoff with enough capital to gain partnership in the Jackson Knife and Shear Company, First National Bank of Fremont, Ohio, the Fremont Home Telephone Company, and eventually the Pemiscott Land and Cooperage Company of Caruthersville, Missouri. Brinkerhoff, along with John M. Sherman, owned some of the most valuable oil interests in northwest Ohio. His real estate interests included 10,000 acres of timberland in Missouri. Further, Judge Brinkerhoff held mining interests in Colorado and actively took part in the construction of several small railroads. Brinkerhoff married Mary B. Brush, daughter of one of the county's founding pioneer couples, Platt and Harriet Hulburd Brush. Following her death in 1891, he married Mary Otis Miller, the daughter of another prominent pioneer, Anson H. Miller. Civic minded, politically active, and an astute businessman, Brinkerhoff achieved personal financial success. His lucrative investments and partnerships with other local entrepreneurs created area jobs and provided Fremont, Ohio with a stable manufacturing base at the turn of the century. Brinkerhoff died in 1906 in Fremont, Ohio. Six years later, his widow, Mary Otis Miller Brinkerhoff, married Webb C. Hayes, son of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Mary Miller Hayes used much of the Brinkerhoff wealth to further her civic interests as well as those of Webb C. Hayes.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the Brinkerhoff collection consists of the business records, political documents and family and business correspondence generated by Brinkerhoff from 1889 to 1906. Additionally, the collection includes family legal documents, including trusts, deeds, and estate records for the period. However, its primary focus is Brinkerhoff's involvement in the early development of local oil, real estate, and manufacturing enterprises as well as his national interests, including railroading, mining, and timber.
