This collection was donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center by Richard F. Mann in December of 1997.

 

Biographical Sketch

 

William Stahl was born on 15 May 1843, in Seneca County, Ohio.He enlisted in the 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company E, at Camp Noble, Tiffin, Ohio, on 22 August 1861.Stahl participated in a number of battles during the American Civil War, including the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, September 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, and the 1864 Atlanta campaign.Original members of the 49th Ohioóexcepting veteransó were mustered out upon the expiration of the regimentís three year term of service.Remaining members, including Stahl, were mustered out on 30 November 1865.

 

Stahl returned to Ohio following the war and wed Christina R. Smith on 22 April 1865.The couple would have two daughters, Rosa and Sara.They remained in Ohio until 1880, at which time the family relocated to Ithaca, Gratiot County, Michigan, where Stahl worked as a farmer.He passed away 10 September 1931 in Michigan; he was 88 years old.

 

Scope and Content

 

This collection, dating from 1861 to 1931, contains records pertaining to American Civil War soldier William Stahl.It includes typed transcriptions of his journal entries, which detail the travels of the regiment, as well as accounts of several larger battles of the war.It also has photocopies of Stahlís enlistment forms, muster roll forms, appointment as sergeant, discharge papers, pension records, and newspaper clippings.The collection contains photocopies of Stahlís wartime correspondence as well, with accompanying typed transcriptions.
