Introduction

The records of the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital (Fremont, Ohio) were donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in 1999. Box 2 and Box 5 of the Memorial Hospital Collection (LH-172) contain additional records of this organization.

Agency History

The Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital was founded in 1918 by Mrs. Webb C. (Mary Miller) Hayes. Originally known as the Women's Committee of Memorial Hospital, the group consisted of twenty-one members. It included the six chairmen of the Women's Teams in the fund raising drive to build Memorial Hospital, as well as the wives of the Board of Trustees. Its first president, Mrs. Willis B. Holmes, served for three years. She was followed by Mrs. Lester Wilson, who led the organization for the next 17 years. In 1920, the association formally changed its name to the Women's Board of Memorial Hospital. A constitution, by-laws, and a statement of purpose were established in 1924. The organization's mission was “to advance the welfare of Memorial Hospital through service to the hospital and its patients and through fund raising in a manner satisfactory to the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hospital.” Early fund raisers included garden parties, a charity ball, and linen showers. The auxiliary provided an abundance of foodstuffs, hospital linens, and money to the institution. During World War II, the organization assisted the Red Cross in providing supplies for service men. By 1952, the auxiliary's volunteer services included the gift shop, gift cart, pediatric toy cart, mail delivery, and reception services. In 1959, the auxiliary established the Nurse Scholarship Loan Program, designed to encourage nurses to return to the hospital following their education. The program expanded to include other health care workers. Over one hundred students were provided with auxiliary scholarship loans. In 1999, the first scholarship was awarded without expectation of repayment. Other important services, including campaigns to bring a pediatrician to Fremont and fund raisers for the hospital's expansion, Mobile Meals, Tel-Med Health, Life Line Personal Response system, were overseen by the auxiliary. Additionally, members raised funds for beds, ventilators, a fetal heart monitor, as well as stress testing equipment. Two hundred seventy-eight members contributed over 36,000 volunteer hours in 1999.

Scope and Content

Although the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital existed since 1918, the bulk of the records found within the collection cover the years from 1958 to 1999. They include: executive board meeting minutes, financial reports, constitutional amendments, extensive membership records, photographs, service and fund raising committee reports, and scrapbooks. Undergoing major health care changes, the hospital made greater use of the auxiliary. The collection gives some understanding of the organization's importance to the institution and its expanding role during the latter half of the twentieth century.
