This collection was acquired by the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in 1969 and contains one photo album.

Biographical Sketch

 

Walter F. Huber was born on 5 July 1839 in Green Springs, Ohio to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Huber.  At the age of 16 Walter left Sandusky County, Ohio, to pursue lumbering in Michigan.  Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted from Grand Rapids, Michigan in the 1st Michigan Engineers Regiment, Company B on 29 Oct. 1861.

 

During the war Huber had the opportunity to serve under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman and Chief Engineer Orlando M. Poe.  Walter directed the destruction of a pistol factory during the Siege of Atlanta in 1864 and fought at Shiloh, Stone’s River, and Sherman’s March to the Sea.  He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company E before finishing his service on 22 Sept. 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.

 

Walter Huber returned to Green Springs, Ohio after the war and opened a sawmill near his home.  In 1866 he married Emeline Young and the couple had six children: Vernon, Ward, Floyd, Mrs. William Thraves, Mrs. Arthur Rathbun and Blanche.  In the community, the area around Walter’s farm and business became known as Huber’s Corner.  He died on 16 of March 1924 at the age of 86 and is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont, Ohio.

Scope and Content

 

This collection, spanning from 1861 to 1865, contains a single carte de visite album belonging to Walter F. Huber who was a member of the 1st Michigan Engineers Regiment, Company B.  The photographs in the album are primarily images of soldiers in Civil War uniform,. with the bulk of them being identified. There are also two gem type photographs in the carte de visite album. In addition, the album contains carte de visite images of prominent Civil War military leaders.
