Biographical Sketch
Harry Sanderson Day
was born 16 May 1871 to John and Emily (Williams) Day. He received his early education
in the Fremont
public school system, and then worked for the railway mail service until 1891. At this time he enrolled at Oberlin College,
Oberlin, Ohio;
he would also spend some time at Otterbein
College, Westerville, Ohio. Day married Lola Garvin in 1901, and they had
a daughter named Mary Elizabeth. Day was
actively involved in a number of organizations in Sandusky County, Ohio,
and held an interest in politics, business, and banking throughout his
life. He was named deputy postmaster in
1906, a position he held until 1915. In
1919, he became president of the Ohio Nursery Association, and would operate a
nursery in the area for many years. Day
was also involved in politics, and served two terms as Fremont, Ohio,
mayor from 1918 to 1921. He was elected
state treasurer in 1922, re-elected in 1924, and made an unsuccessful bid as
Republican candidate for governor in 1926.
In 1930, Day once again became state treasurer for Ohio.
He became interested in the banking business as well, and served as
director of the Fremont Federal Savings and Loan Company. He also worked as president of the Liberty
Banking Company for quite some time until his retirement in 1955. In addition, Day led an active public life
and was affiliated with various fraternal and social organizations in the Fremont area. He continued to reside in Fremont in his later years, at 1215 Birchard Avenue. Harry S. Day died at Fremont,
Ohio, Memorial Hospital
on 27 June 1956; he was 85 years old.
