Agency History

This collection contains the records of the Bellevue, Ohio and Fremont, Ohio Business and Professional Womenís Clubs as well as materials from the state and national organizations. Established nationally and statewide in 1919, the organization officially adopted its constitution in 1920. Its purpose was to advocate for equal rights for women, jury service for women, and equal pay. They hoped to elevate the standards for women in business and in the professions; promote the interest of business and professional women; bring about a spirit of cooperation among business and professional women of the United States; extend opportunities to business and professional women through education in the areas of industrial, scientific, and vocational activities; and devote the influence and efforts of their membership for the betterment of the community. The organization sponsored the publication of The Ohio Business Woman.

The Bellevue, Ohio chapter organized in April, 1940, and its Fremont, Ohio counterpart was formed nine years later in January, 1949. The Fremont chapterís first president was Gertrude Bliss. The Fremont group published a monthly newsletter titled Nike News. Members participated in the activities of one of four committees: Education and Vocation, Health and Safety, Public Affairs, and International Relations. The Fremont organization sponsored Civil Defense programs, a local drama guild, nursing education, and parks and recreation. They also supported the Oak Ridge Sanatorium in Green Springs, Ohio and an orphanage in Kyoto, Japan. Locally, it was the first organization to raise funds for the American Heart Association.

Scope & Content

The records of the Business and Professional Womenís Clubs span the years from 1940 to1972, but the bulk of the material dates from the 1960s. The records contain materials and documenhts relating to the national, state, and the local chapters of Bellevue, Ohio and Fremont, Ohio. The records for the Bellevue chapter and the Fremont chapter are incomplete, however, they contain organizational documents, Fremont chapter minutes, membership and treasurerís records, newsletters, scrapbooks, annual yearbooks, newspaper clippings, and organizational correspondence.

Perhaps most valuable are the materials that reflect the local chaptersí public service efforts. The records also contain a file on general publications for women, primarily from the 1960s. Agendas and advocacy information from the national and state organizations are included.
