ABSTRACT OF SANDUSKY COUNTY OHIO WOLF SCALP ORDERS DRAWN ON THE TREASURY OF THE STATE OF OHIO
Wolves were such a menace to Ohio's early settlers that statutes were enacted to "encourage the killing of wolves." They were amended in 1821, 1829, and again in 1831. In June 1831, the law allowed residents to receive a bounty from the state treasurer of Ohio of $4.25 for each wolf scalp (with ears intact) of a wolf over the age of 6 months. For a wolf under the age of 6 months, a bounty of $2.50 could be claimed. Before receiving their bounties, it was necessary for claimants to produce the scalp and swear before the county clerk that the wolf had been killed in the county within the last 20 days. Furthermore, claimants were required to swear that they "had not spared the life of any she-wolf within your power to kill, with design to increase the breed." County commissioners had the option of increasing the bounty to as high as $6.00 per scalp.
Above is an image of the first page of Sandusky County, Ohio's Wolf Scalp Record kept by the county treasurer. The record lists the names of claimants, dates, and the amount of bounties to be paid by the state of Ohio for wolf scalps produced before the Sandusky County Clerk of Courts for the year 1836. Below are abstracts of the same record book through 1859.
