Thanks, Kin Hunters!
The Sandusky County Kin Hunters are the local genealogical society, formed in 1967 as a division of the Sandusky County Historical Society. In 1983, they became a separate organization and in 1989 became a chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. In the past they have helped the Hayes Library by volunteering and by donating their publications and funds for special drives, such as the purchase of census microfilm. This past month they voted to help support the Hayes Presidential Library’s genealogical collection by paying for one year’s subscription to Heritage Quest. This helps the Center immensely and we appreciate their generosity.
They also voted to donate some of their older circulating library books to the Hayes Library, adding about 60 titles to our collections. See the list below for all of the “new” books that will now be available to anyone coming into the Library.
The Kin Hunters have a newsletter, Kith ‘n Kin, which is published six times a year and is edited by Gayle Collins Mehling. They have also been publishing new books, the latest being a reprint of the 1874 Sandusky County Atlas and Washington Township Cemetery Records. They are always looking for new members – if interested, visit the web site below for contact information.

Treasures and Tombstones in the Stacks
The last issue of the News had an article on some tax records that have been used frequently in the last two months by people searching their house’s history, so we thought it might be useful to highlight some other collections that genealogists will find of interest which may have been overlooked.
The Hayes Library has records of the Fremont Monumental Company from 1938 to 1966. This collection contains 5 volumes of books kept by E.A. Starkloff and M. J. Keogh. They provide such information as the purchase of the headstone, the address of the purchaser, the date of the purchase, the price of the stone, information carved on to the stone and the name of the cemetery where the stone was to be placed.
We have photocopied these records for the Reading Room use and one of our volunteers, Dennis Smith, has indexed them. Look for them on the shelf in the Reading Room in the Sandusky County section, F497.S2F87.
Along the same lines, there is another interesting manuscript collection – the Hughes Granite and Marble Company collection (LH 252). This business was located in Clyde and built monuments, markers, and mausoleums. It flourished from 1893 to 1921 and became one of the best known granite companies in the nation. The Library has several boxes of business records and prints of monuments.

You may search this database by title, state, locality, and/or year of photograph. You may also browse the images contained in this collection by first selecting a state, followed by a year, and finally title of photograph.
Some of the interesting Ohio shots include a few of Camp Perry, several of the 1913 flood throughout the state, and many pre-1918 shots of Ohio colleges and universities
