Ohio Obituary Index
1.8 Million Names
The Ohio Obituary Index has been steadily growing since our last newsletter in the Fall. Deshler (Henry Co.), Wadsworth (Medina Co.) and Lorain Public Libraries have all received training and are currently entering new data into the Index. Marysville Public Library (Union Co.) will be joining us in the next few months, bringing the total of partner libraries to 48 and the number of people indexed up to 1,800,000!
Here at Hayes we keep breaking our own records for the number of obit look-ups we do for out-of-towners. In Feb. 2011, a short month, our volunteers and staff looked up 815 obits for people. Just think of the brick walls that were toppled! Thanks go to our great group of volunteers who do the look-ups: Sue, Mary, Larry, Joan, and Jan.
The heavy usage can be attributed partially to the partnership of Ancestry.com and the popularity of the TV program Who Do You Think You Are which is currently in its second season and encouraging viewers to explore their roots joining the ranks of us family history junkies.
Recently we were approached by another genealogical subscription service, www.Archives.com, asking for our Obit Index database. We agreed to add them as a partner knowing that the added exposure of the Index is a good thing for all. Although the data was given to them, it has not yet shown up on their site but I would expect it to within a few months.
This partnership has provided a benefit to Hayes Presidential Center members in addition to the HeritageQuestOnline perk. When you become a member at the $45 level or above or renew, you will given a unique username and password and you will have access to Archives.com from your home. This family history website has a fully searchable database of over one billion vital records and historical documents and newspapers. The newspaper component alone makes this a very useful new resource in your genealogy toolkit.
To join and get these genealogical benefits, go to
http://www.rbhayes.org/hayes/joinmember/scroll down and click on the appropriate box to renew or join as a new member.
Those of you who have recently renewed or have become a $45+ member can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org we can add this benefit to your existing membership. Please be patient if you don't hear from me right away. I will try to get these done asap but you may have a few days wait.
