New Look to Obituary Index
On May 8, 2009, the new design of the Ohio Obituary Index was revealed. The top page of the Index now matches the rest of the Hayes Presidential Center website. The information that was previously all on the top page, such as the lists of the partner libraries, the newspapers indexed, background information, etc., are now Features on the left side of the page. I have heard from some of our patrons that they had never seen those files, so the re-design has already proven useful. Be sure to check the Features out you may learn something new!
We also added a new page on how your local Ohio Library can become a part of this Index http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/display.asp?id=936&subj=index
If youve always wished to have your area of Ohio better represented, this explains how libraries can join. We always appreciate your support in expanding this useful genealogical resource.
With the new Ancestry.com partnership, we want to make sure that our web visitors know the Hayes Presidential Center is more than just its amazing obituary index. The links on the top of the page will allow them to fully explore the Centers website and possibly learn something about our guy, Rud!
We do not yet have a date for the actual merge of our data with Ancestry.com yet, but we have included a logo on the top page of the Obits Index showing that they are our partners. Remember that our website will remain the same free as it has always been and at the same location, but just duplicated in Ancestry .
As of May 15th, the Hayes Library will increase the $2.50 fee we currently charge for obits to $3.00. We have not changed our fee since we put the site up back in 2000. We have had a brisk trade in obituary ordering since the message went up on the website stating the price increase !.
Thanks to the following who have given donations of money or materials to the Hayes Library since the last newsletter:
Jill Carter Knuth
William J. White
Dr. and Mrs. Harry Burger
Harold Corky Logsdon
Family of Guy Lynn Leedy
Sandusky County Kin Hunters A special thanks to the local chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society for their continued support with our Heritage Quest subscription. This is a major genealogical reference source that they make possible and is used by both our in-house researchers and our long-distance members.
Another valuable donation was from the Norwalk Public Library which gave us a microfilm reader-printer that they no longer needed. This machine has been extremely popular since its arrival since it is similar to one we already had which our patrons prefer.
Roots Magic Workshop
The creator of RootsMagic genealogy software, Bruce Buzbee of Utah, visited the Hayes Center for the fourth time April 5, 2009 and drew a record crowd of over 100 people. Bruce donated free programs, tote bags, and autographed books to any person who joined the Hayes Center at the $100 level. Thanks go to Bruce and his wife, Laura, for making this one of their stops when in Ohio for the Ohio Genealogical Societys annual conference. And thanks to the following people who became members at the Patron level that day:
Vincent Bennice, Roger Bonnette, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Brouse, Mr. & Mrs. Glenn Campbell, Mr. & Mrs. Tim Cox, Peggy Debien, Barbara Dickey, Mr. & Mrs. Gary Druckenmiller, Shirley A. Floro, Susan Halen, Suzanne Jackson, Mr. & Mrs. Patrick McGrady, Mr. & Mrs. John Paul, Nancy Pickens, Denise Rogalinski, Nancy Scott, and Mikhail Voss.
More great information on FamilySearch for Ohio
Check out the following link for Catholic Church records for Northwest Ohio - http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionGuidance;c=1494476
This wonderful addition to the FamilySearch Pilot Site contains digital images of parish registers for Catholic churches throughout Northwest Ohio and includes records such as baptisms, first communions, confirmations, marriages, and deaths. They are not indexed at this time, but you can browse by the time period in which your ancestors might appear. Church records are particularly valuable for years when civil records did not exist, so the baptisms and deaths before 1867 may be the only place people can find those dates. In general, the records on this website range from 1796 to 2004. Birth and marriage records less than 70 years old are not available due to privacy restrictions.
Be sure to try all the valuable sources on this free web site Familysearch.org - including the ever popular digital images of Ohio Death Certificates from 1908 to 1953.
