Hayes Presidential Center supporters
The Hayes Presidential Center is presenting a special day entitled Celebrating Presidential Memories on August 9th. The main purpose is to bring together descendants and relatives of President Hayes and Lucy, but also those who have memories of the Grove since it was opened to the public in the early 1900s.
There will be morning and afternoon events, some of which are free, and in the evening a large tent will be set up in the garden area behind the Home for socializing, elegant hors doeuvres, and special entertainment talks by the family of memories of living in the Home, films of the Grove in the 1920s - 30s and staff members in the 1950s and 60s. The evening event will be a fundraiser to help support the Hayes Center.
The top page of the Hayes website has additional information on the event
A schedule of events is posted here - http://www.rbhayes.org/hayes/content/files/Events_info/presidential_memories_-_schedule.doc
As the genealogist here at the Center, I have been busy updating the family history in preparation for this. I will be giving a brief, free talk twice during the day speaking about both the Hayes and Webb families, hopefully highlighting those people who are attending from various branches. We also plan to have large genealogical charts showing various lines of descent from the President and Lucy for the public to view.
We have been reviewing the old 16 mm films and pictures from the museum's vaults and digitizing them. What a treasure trove for any genealogist seeing movies from the 1920s-1930s of their families! Then, as now, the films center on vacations and travels. For people who grew up around Spiegel Grove we have many shots of the way it was the Museum before the new addition in the 1960s, the old entrance, the pond in the Grove, with ducks. These films will be shown in the evening.
Another extra will be a self-guided tour of the Grove in the afternoon with people at each stop giving information on that particular historic site such as Peggy Fleming site, the tombs, the Harrison Trail, etc. Add to this mix, a free concert by the The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band Brass Quintet, a great Quilt Exhibit in the museum and house, and the fact that current descendeants of the Presidents family will be on hand to welcome guests during the days events and the day adds up to something very special.
Please plan on attending and help support the Center by signing up for the evenings entertainment. Being a part of the planning committee, I can tell you this will be a first-class, one-time-only event. I have seen the menu and it is impressive, but the dress will be appropriate to an August evening and not formal!!
The deadline for the making reservations for the evening event is coming up very soon JULY 25th. If you have any questions, contact Kathy Boukissen at 419.332.2081 or firstname.lastname@example.org. After July 29th, you can contact me, but I will be on vacation until then.
Look for a more informative genealogical update in later August after we get caught up with these special summer events. I hope to make a special announcement soon regarding additional genealogical opportunities at the Hayes Library.
