ARCHIVAL INTERNSHIPS

The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center offers unpaid archival internships to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in History, Archival Administration, Museum Studies, Political Science, Library Science, English, Communications, Journalism and related disciplines. Ideally, students should have an interest in pursuing a career in Archival Administration, Public History, Museum Management, Historic Preservation or Library Science. Good writing and research skills; familiarity with the Internet, scanning, image uploading; and knowledge of Windows, Word Perfect, Access, Dream Weaver MX, and Front Page are helpful.

Work Experience

The internship offers opportunities for students to acquire skills and experience outside the traditional academic setting. The intern will assist the Curator of Manuscripts and/or the Head of Photographic Resources in performing a broad range of archival duties involving the Hayes Presidential Center's Manuscript and Photograph Collections. The intern may gain experience in the arrangement and description of collections, basic preservation techniques, accession procedures, records and database management, and collections access through the Hayes Center's web site. The intern also may be asked to assist with exhibit preparation, educational seminars, clerical duties, data entry, reference, and historical research.

Schedule

Interns must have reliable transportation to and from the Hayes Presidential Center and be able to arrange a reasonably consistent work schedule between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Course credit

Most internships require 110 to 130 hours of work over the course of one but not more than two semesters. If course credit is to apply to the internship, students should make arrangements with the individual instructor.

Interview

Interested applicants may arrange for an interview by contacting Nan Card, Curator of Manuscripts, at the Hayes Presidential Center, 1/800-998-7737, x. 39 or ncard@rbhayes.org. Applicant's interests, work schedule, expectations, and project plans will be discussed during the interview.
