Search and Shopping Tips
Basic Search
  • Last Name - searches exact name only.

  • First/Middle Name – searches names for exact matches and also names that “begin with”

    Examples:
    • Search Overmyer as a last name will only yield that spelling of Overmyer.
    • Search Overmyer in last name and K in first name would yield K. Overmyer, Kathy Overmyer, Kenneth Overmyer.

  • It is best to search just the last name and leave the first name blank. A list of the records by the last name will appear and you can scroll through to find the possible matches. The obit may be under a slightly different name than you are searching for and it may be easier to find if you browse through the whole list.

    Example:
    • If you searched exactly for Elizabeth Keller you might miss her if the obit was listed under Betty or Liz Keller, but you could spot her if you scanned through all the Kellers.

  • With common names, you should also enter a first name. Names like Smith with no first name will result in many hits and may overload the connection.

  • A search by name and year combined can be made.

    Example:
    • Search for all the Millers who died in 1940. Typing in Miller in the Last Name and 1940 in the Year of Death brings up 7 Millers who died that year.

  • You can determine the number of hits that are displayed by clicking on the numbers on the bottom of the page, from 10 to 100 names returned. The default setting is 25 hits.

  • For more comprehensive searches, use the Advanced Search option.

To bring up the details for a person, SINGLE CLICK on details. Double-clicking may minimize the details page to the bottom taskbar and the information will be hidden.

If a search comes up with no hits and you think there should be some in the database, then delete your original search and try again.

Advanced Search
This will allow for a variety of ways to search for names. It is up to the user to experiment with different spellings of the names they are researching. This search engine allows you the flexibility to do so. Remember the Hayes Library indexed the name as published in the newspaper, which may not be how it is spelled now.

Search Box:
  • Type in the name you would like to search. Type in only one name – last name, first name, or middle name – not all three.

  • Click on whichever fields you would like to search. If it is a last name, you can search it as last name, spouse’s name, maiden name, or even the notes field.

    Examples:

    • Searching for “Bowen” as a last name yields 50 records,
    • Last name and spouse’s last name yields 57 records,
    • Last name and spouse’s last name and maiden name will yield 66 records,
    • Last name, spouse’s last name, maiden name, and notes will yield 71 records.

  • The maiden name field contains not only maiden names, but also other last names, usually for women who married more than once.

  • If the person you are looking for had an unusual first name, then you could search for it as a First Name and come up with all the people who had that first name.

    Example:

    • Searching for “Hezekiah” as a first name will yield 11 names, including Hezekiah Horner and Hezekiah Higley.

  • Clicking the year of death will narrow search.

    Example:

    • Searching for Bowen as a last name and 1897 as the year of death will yield 2 records.
Exact Match /Begins with/ Ends with /Anywhere within name:
  • This dropdown menu gives the researcher the power to search for those names with alternate spellings.

    Examples:

    • Searching “Overm”, clicking on “Last Name” and then clicking on “Begins With” will yield all the Overmyers, Overmoyer, Overmeiers, Overmayers, etc.
    • Searching for “Donnells”, clicking on “Last Name” and then clicking on “Ends with” will yield all the Donnells, McDonnells, O’Donnells.
    • Searching for “Ross”, clicking on “Last Name” and then clicking on “Anywhere within name” will yield the names Cross, Deross, Montross, Ross, Rossman, etc.

WARNING - The more detailed the search, the longer time it will take for it to be completed.

To bring up the details for a person, SINGLE CLICK on details. Double-clicking may minimize the details page to the bottom taskbar and the information will be hidden.

If a search comes up with no hits and you think there should be some in the database, then delete your original search and try again.
