Event List

Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Event Title: Hayes Train Special
Event Description: The spirit of holidays past is revived in this operating model train display. The 12x24-foot, three-tier layout features eight G-, O-, and Standard-gauge trains. All of the trains are styles that relate to the life of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes and his family. Visitors act as engineers lifting gates, flashing lights, sounding the whistle, and more, via a series of interactive buttons. A miniature Victorian village provides a picturesque setting through which the trains travel. Admission is included in the Hayes Museum ticket price. Major sponsor of the exhibit is the Gordon W. Knight Family. Additional funding is provided by Memorial Health Care System.

Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Event Title: CIVIL WAR: Battlefield & Homefront
Event Description: The year 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the start of America’s Civil War. On the exact date that the first Confederate shots were fired on Fort Sumter – the act that marked the war’s beginning – the Hayes Presidential Center opens CIVIL WAR: Battlefield & Homefront. The exhibit interprets the war years using the letters of Northern Ohio residents who served in the war and those who stayed behind. Much has been written about the lives of soldiers, but the lives of those back at home is virtually unexplored. This exhibit is made possible through sponsorship from Auto-Owners Insurance and Diversified Insurance.

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Event Title: Coping with Imprisonment: The Life of POWs at the Johson's Island Civil War Prison
Event Description: Dr. David Bush of Heidelberg College makes use of historical and archaeological evidence from the Johnson's Island Civil War Military Prison (Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie, Ohio) to examine the choices that POWs had during the American Civil War. Johnson’s Island held over 10,000 Confederate Officers throughout the war. Newly confined Confederate officers had to cope with thoughts about survival, escape, or assimilation. Archaeological and historical evidence provide insights into how each prisoner adapted to their status of Prisoner-of-War. This presentation will highlight some of the fascinating discoveries Dr. Bush has documented in his newly released book, "I Fear I Shall Never Leave This Island: Life in a Civil War Prison." Dr. Bush will be available for a book signing after the presentation. Admission is free. Sponsored by Diversified Insurance and Auto-Owners Insurance.
