"...I received a letter yesterday from Brother Austin [Birchard]; he announced the death of our dear unfortunate sister [Cynthia] Taylor; she was killed by lightning on the 5th. You or Austin Taylor have probably had the particulars. She seemed to be marked as the child of affliction and sorrow. Her mother [Sarah Frost] Taylor said she was sure she was a Christian before the dark cloud passed over her that enshrouded her intellect in more than midnight darkness...I have mourned for her many years, but I now cease to mourn; her pilgrimage is ended. The manner of her death is shocking at first but I feel that the arrow of death was in kindness..."
Sophia Birchard Hayes to her brother Austin Birchard, July 16, 1842

"...I have just received your letter announcing the death of our dear unfortunate sister. I can remember her as the lovely and idolized child of the family when she was beautiful and beloved; little did we expect a dark cloud to pass over her and enshroud her intellect in more than midnight darkness..."
Sophia Birchard Hayes to her brother, Austin Birchard, July 17, 1842
"Cynthia Birchard married Dr. Simon Taylor, of Newfane, the first physician to practice in Williamsville, in 1813, and who died there in 1818. Their daughter, Cynthia B. Taylor, lived in the family of Reuben Jones of Dummerston as an adopted child. She died June 20, 1859, aged 43 years"
D.L. Mansfield, Dummerston History, in Bigelow Scrapbook, Aug. 1892

"It becomes necessary that some provision be made for the support of our poor unfortunate sister, Mrs. Taylor. The little property which she had when I became her Guardian, together with the proceeds of her place and her share of the Wilmington Tavern stand, amounting to about $500..It is now all expended and she is indebted to me for her support...Nothing but the ties of relationship would have induced me to keep her so long... It comes extremely hard upon Mrs. Birchard. Cynthia is very saucy and ugly as all deranged persons will be at times..."
