Keeler Emily Hayes Platt and General Russell Hastings were married on 19 June 1878 in Washington, DC. Married in the White House and honeymooned in Bermuda where they bought property and eventually lived. General Russell Hastings was born on 30 May 1835 in Greenfield, Franklin Co., MA. He died on 18 September 1904 in Petersham, Worcester Co., MA.. General Hastings served as President Hayes' aide-de-camp during the Civil War. He displayed great courage in combat and was severely wounded at the Battle of Opequon. He was breveted brigadier general of volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was elected a member of the Ohio legislature, and while serving, was appointed U.S. Marshall for the northern district of Ohio. Owing to ill health, he resigned in 1874. Later, following his second marriage, he went to Hamilton, Bermuda, making a home at "Soncy", where he grew lilies for the New York market.
