252. Russell Hayes was born on 31 May 1784 in West Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT. He died on 28 July 1856 in West Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT. Farmer; He inherited his father's place, the "Hayes Tavern" in W. Brattleboro, which for a long time was the family gathering place. The old residence was kept in the family until its destruction in 1960.
Some of Russell Hayes' original record books and papers, including his red handkerchief and other relics, are preserved in the Hayes Presidential Center, Fremont, OH.

Russell Hayes and Martha Billings were married on 13 June 1837 in Feeding Hills, Hampden Co., MA. Martha Billings was born on 16 April 1800 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA. She died on 2 August 1872 in W. Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT. "Aunt Martha had a severe attack of pleurisy, but had somewhat recovered and all thought she would soon be well... The first that we were really alarmed about her was July 28th. I called there then and found that she had not left her bed for two days and had failed greatly since we last saw her. I called at the Doc's close by and asked him if he had not better send a telegram to Mary... Her death occurred Aug. 2, 10 1/2 o'clock, p.m. We (my wife and I) being the only relatives now living in town, attended to the funeral ceremonies... Aunt M's age was 72. She had a brother and two sisters living who were at the funeral"
