SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO INFIRMARY

The Sandusky County Infirmary, as it was originally known, was established in 1850. When Homer Everett compiled the AHistory of Sandusky County@ in 1882, he stated that few complete reports were available prior to 1880. From 1869 to 1880, the average annual number of inmates ranged from 35 to 57. He further stated that Atransients@ were given temporary relief but were not considered inmates, even though their numbers increased the residency rate threefold each year.

The earliest extant records of the Sandusky County Infirmary begin in 1880 and are contained in a single ledger donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in 1992. Later records exist on microfilm and are also located at the Hayes Presidential Center. A printout of the infirmary records is available.

The list posted online represents the names of orphans who were admitted to the Sandusky County Infirmary and later transferred to the Protestant Orphans' Home in Cleveland, Ohio. The earliest date for the transfer of a child was 1883 and the final transfers were made in 1926. Some of these children were later adopted from the Cleveland home. The final 11 children listed were transferred to locations other than the Cleveland home.
