Dorn Foundation Sponsors Visit for Monroeville 4th Grade Students
The Randolph J. & Estelle M. Dorn Foundation sponsored visits for about 50 4th grade students from Monroeville Elementary in May 2014. Students had the opportunity to visit both the Hayes Home and Museum. The entire experience was part of the Hayes Presidential Centers Curriculum Connections program. Teachers from Monroeville Elementary commented that "The Curriculum Connections program fits perfectly with the state curriculum for 4th grade social studies." And that the "program promotes pride within the students for their state's heritage."
Designed as a three-part "satellite classroom" experience, Curriculum Connections provides teachers with two educational DVD resources. These DVDs contain both pre and post visit activities for students. Created by the Hayes Center staff, the DVDs complement the learning experience of students onsite visit. The pre visit activity, Exploring Ohio's Past : A Visit to the Hayes Presidential Center, features original documents, photographs, and artifacts owned by the Hayes Presidential Center. Fully aligned with Ohio s Academic Content Standards, Curriculum Connections also encourages students critical thinking skills and creativity through its How Can We Learn More? post visit activities.
Hayes Presidential Center Development Director Kathy Boukissen is seeking additional sponsors for school systems that do not have adequate funding for a visit.
