Woodmore Students Visit the Hayes Presidential Center

Woodmore students learn how President Rutherford B. Hayes and his family lived during their visit to the Hayes Home in December 2012

Seventy-four 4th grade Woodmore Elementary students toured the Home and Museum of President Rutherford B. Hayes on December 19. Their participation in the Hayes Presidential Center's Curriculum Connections education program was made possible by the Fremont Federal Credit Union. The credit union is one of six original sponsors that covered the cost of admissions for students at Woodmore located in Woodville, Ohio. Their sponsorship helped make the new education program a success in its very first year.

Fremont Federal Credit Union A firsthand learning experience, Curriculum Connections merges technology with original artifacts, historic photographs, and documents that create opportunities for students to learn about the 19th president of the United States. Also, students gain a greater understanding of how Americans lived, worked, and played during the 19th century.

Fully aligned with Ohio's Academic Standards and reviewed by area curriculum directors, the pair of DVDs given to each teacher when registering allows educators to utilize the 21st Century Skills of critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. At the same time, students learn about Ohio's settlement, development, and its prominent residents, including President Rutherford B. Hayes. Educational material provided in the DVDs is not duplicated during tours given by the Center's guides and docents. Rather the materials presented on the DVDs complement students' onsite visit, creating a memorable educational experience.

Hayes Presidential Center Development Director Kathy Boukissen is seeking additional sponsors for school systems that do not have adequate funding for a visit. For more information about Curriculum Connections or to donate to the program contact Kathy at 419-332-2081, ext. 226 or email her at kboukissen@rbhayes.org .
