How can I donate my manuscripts, documents, and photographs to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center?

May I take a tax deduction for my donated materials?
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is recognized as a qualified charitable organization. The fair market value of your donated materials is generally tax deductible for filers who itemize their taxes. You must file tax form 1040 and, depending on the value of your donation, tax form 8283 to take advantage of your deduction. It is recommended that you consult with your own accountant, attorney, and/or the Internal Revenue Service. You may also wish to consult Internal Revenue Service Publication No. 526 “Charitable Contributions” and Publication No. 561 “Determining the Value of Donated Property.”
Will the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center appraise my donated materials for their monetary value?
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center is prohibited from providing appraisals of the monetary value of materials proposed for donation or for other reasons because museums and libraries are viewed as interested parties. Professional appraisers do perform this service for a fee. To locate a licensed appraiser in your area, contact the American Society of Appraisers, the International Society of Appraisers, or the Appraisers Association of America, for a referral.
Does the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center accept long-term loans?
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center commits a significant portion of its resources to preserving and storing its collections, therefore, it cannot accept materials on a long-term loan basis.
Will the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center display my donated materials?
While the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center cannot guarantee that materials donated to its collections will be displayed, most documents and photographs from the collections are made available for research purposes. Many are used in temporary exhibits. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center allocates a significant portion of its annual budget to conservation and the maintenance of optimal conditions for the long-term preservation and storage of its collections.
