August 18, 1877

Windsor, VT

I will speak a few words to the people with whom I have been shaking hands. We never feel quite well acquainted with one another until we have heard each otherís voices, and having an opportunity to make the acquaintance of the people of this most delightful part of the United States, we want to talk a little.I donít intend to say much myself, but to call upon several gentlemen who are associated with me in the government, whom you will be glad to hear.To begin with I shall call upon the gentleman who conducts the correspondence with foreign governments, and who writes the high sounding words in the documents to which I have to put my signature. If you ever see my name under such documents you must bear in mind that they were written by your neighbor.I hope he is neighborly.I will mow introduce Mr. Evarts, the Secretary of State of the United States.
