It is the custom when strangers meet to extend a greeting by the shaking of hands.  I should be very glad if time permitted to shake you all by the hand.  As it is, we can only get acquainted by hearing each other’s voices, but you have not heard much of mine; but, as Mr. Lincoln used to say when urgently called upon to speak during his journey to Washington in 1861, “I suppose you are here to see me and I am here to see you, and I have to inform you that I think I have the best of the bargain.”
