Presented to
Rutherford B. Hayes

Before, during, and after his presidency, Rutherford B. Hayes received gifts from friends, family, constituents, politicians, government officials, and dignitaries. President Hayes' incoming correspondence contains more than 400 letters in which donors described their gifts.

The report below lists the name of each individual donor, his/her residence, the date, and the gift item. Hayes received books, food, music, personal items, animals, photographs, documents, manuscripts, and items belonging to famous Americans.

On only one occasion did President Hayes return a gift - a coat that he deemed too expensive to be given as a gift.
