Introduction

The Joyce Tuckerman Zeigler Collection was donated to the Hayes Presidential Center in 2010.

Biographical Sketch

Joyce Ann (Tuckerman) Zeigler was born January 21, 1937 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio to Melvin “Mel” Ezra and Ida Laverne (Pfaff) Tuckerman. Joyce attended Nathan Hale Elementary and Lincoln Avenue Elementary Schools in Toledo; Hillview Elementary in Sylvania Township; junior and senior high school in Sylvania, Ohio.  She graduated from Burnham High School in 1955.  She was president of her class her 7th, 8th, and freshman year.

After graduating from high school, Joyce held various jobs including the Doehler-Jarvis, Division of National Lead Company; Franklin Glue Company in Columbus, Ohio; Amstan Supply Company, Division of American Standard Corporation; March of Dimes; Refiners Transport and Leaseway and the Loren Cook Company in Berea, Ohio.

She married John Burl “Jack” Zeigler (b. February 28, 1937, son of Burley John and Irene Virginia Sarah (Claudon) Zeigler) on December 21, 1957 at Olivet Lutheran Church, Sylvania Ohio by Reverend James Keyser.  They had two children: Katherine Marie born August 31, 1960 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio and Dale Allen born July 20, 1963 in Defiance, Defiance County, Ohio.

In 1974 she began to trace her family history.  Growing increasingly more interested in genealogy, she continued her work in earnest for many years.  She became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Colonists as well as several genealogical societies.  From this enthusiasm for genealogical study, Joyce compiled a detailed record of her ancestors’ family histories. Joyce Tuckerman Zeigler passed away in 2005.

Scope and Content

The collection contains 32 binders of Joyce Zeigler’s genealogical research and records, organized by the surnames of the many families, as well as a box of printed materials and research notes.  Though primarily focused on the genealogical history of her family’s ancestors, Joyce  Zeigler’s collection also documents in detail families with connections to the Tuckerman and Zeigler families.  The collection contains extensive photocopies of newspaper articles, photographs, maps, censuses, genealogical charts, and selections from printed nonfiction historical works, marriage records and death records.

The collection also contains a number of original photographs.  Her research traces some families back as far as the seventeenth century. However, the bulk of the collection pertains to later nineteenth century through the twentieth century with original materials from 1880 to 1990.  The inventory provides a more detailed description of the contents of each binder.
