The John P. Spears Collection was donated in 2015.
The son of Robert P. and Caroline F. Brown Spears, John P. Spears was born March 26, 1837 in Copley, Summit County, Ohio. John P. had at least two older siblings: Charles W., a carpenter, who died in 1896 at the age of 71 years and a sister Maria M., born 1845.
In 1861, John P. enlisted as a private in Company E, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Farmer Center, Ohio. Spears served throughout the Civil War. He was discharged February 28, 1865 at Columbus, Ohio. He married Nancy Louisa Alderman the following April. She was born in 1845 in Milford Twp. Defiance County, Ohio, the daughter of Sidney and Nancy Ackley Alderman.
John P. and Nancy Louisa lived in Edgerton, Ohio. They were the parents of three daughters: Clara, Jessie, and Lula. Lula was born December 21, 1886. Nancy Louisa died February 25, 1887.
Lula married Frank Orr Walden Meyers December 21, 1907 in Ashley, Indiana. He was born February 7, 1886, the son of Curtis and Mary Orr Meyers, who had migrated from Ontario, Canada around 1870. In 1910, Frank and Lula Spears Meyers were living with his parents, Curtis and Mary, in DeKalb, Indiana.
Two sons and one daughter were born to Frank and Lula Spears Meyers: Harold L., John Curtis., and Guinevere. Frank Orr W. Meyers attended Purdue University for two years. At the time of his death, in Montpelier, Ohio on October 8, 1921, he worked as a brakeman for the Wabash Railroad.
Harold Meyers married Katherine Van Rensselaer in 1934 in Rome City, Indiana. The couple settled in Maumee, Ohio. Harold Meyers worked for the Maumee school system and then became secretary for the Maumee city clerk. They were the parents of three daughters: Joan Gilbert, Jane Wilson, and Gwen Smetzer.
John Curtis Meyers was born December 17, 1911 in Montpelier, Ohio. After his father’s death in 1921, the family moved to Maumee, Ohio. John married Violet A. Managhan in September 1943. He served in the United States Coast Guard aboard the USS Samuel Chase during WWII. In 1974, John retired from Standard Oil in Toledo, Ohio after 43 years with the company. John passed away in 1993.
Guinevere Walden Meyers was born in Montpelier, Ohio March 4, 1913. She married Doyal Stevens McNair February 14, 1945 in Broward County, Florida. Guinevere worked as a secretary. She passed in Coral Gables., Florida January 11, 1981.

This collection, dating from 1865 to 1993, contains original documents regarding John P. Spears’ Civil War service in the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and pension records; vital records of Frank Orr Walden Meyers, WWII and vital records of John Curtis Meyers, as well as birth, death and marriage records for Guinevere Meyers McNair; obituary cards for Charles W. Spears (brother of John P. Spears) and Nancy Louisa Alderman Spears (wife of John P. Spears); and numerous original photographs identifying family members of Frank Orr and Lula Spears Meyers. Also included are several unidentified photographs, newspaper clippings, genealogical correspondence, research notes, memorabilia regarding John Curtis Meyers compiled by James H. Meyers of Hollis, New Hampshire, son of John Curtis Meyers.
