Biographical Sketch

Thaddeus Baker Hurd was born in Clyde, Ohio, October 23, 1903, the first son of Herman Hurd (1877-1963) and Jennie Baker Hurd (1881-1945). Herman was a longtime grocer in Clyde and Jennie was a homemaker. Their second son, Hiram Hurd (1906-1984) was born in Clyde December 7, 1906. Thaddeus Hurd graduated from Clyde High School in 1920 at the top of his class. He attended Oberlin College for two years from 1920 to 1922 then returned to Clyde for one year of teaching in the public schools. From 1923 to 1927 he attended the Cornell University School of Architecture in Ithaca, New York, receiving his B.A. in June of 1927. The following year he worked for New York architect, and in 1930 he returned to Ithaca to teach at the Cornell University College of Architecture. In the fall of 1933, Mr. Hurd embarked on a year long "architectural travel tour" through England and the Middle East. Upon his return from overseas, he began a series of government architectural jobs which lasted until 1944. That year, he took a position with Great Lakes Steel Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. In 1949, he joined the architectural firm Britsch and Munger in Toledo, Ohio. From 1955 until his retirement in 1967, Mr. Hurd practiced as a self-employed architect. Mr. Hurd organized Clyde (Ohio) Heritage League in 1975 and the Clyde Senior Center in 1980. He held various positions in both organizations. He was instrumental in reactivating the Sandusky County Historical Society in 1957 and in 1967 organized the genealogical division. Mr. Hurd held memberships in the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums, Firelands Historical Society, Mad River and NKP Railroad Society, Mayflower Descendants, the Society for the Study of Midwestern Literature, and the Sherwood Anderson Society. THADDEUS B. HURD - ARCHITECTURE COLLECTION
*indicates photographs

This collection covers the career as an architect of Thaddeus B. Hurd. There is a limited amount of information regarding his work in Pittsburgh in 1928 before he attended graduate school at Cornell. After his tenure as a teacher he worked from 1935 to 1941 in the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration. For most of this time he was located in Raleigh, North Carolina and worked primarily designing and overseeing the construction of farm buildings and farm houses. While in Raleigh, Hurd also designed a community theater that was very well received in addition to private work for local homeowners. In 1942 he moved to Edenton, NC, where he helped design facilities for a United States Marine Corps base during World War II.

After the war Hurd returned to northwest Ohio and began working for Great Lakes Steel Corporation in Toledo - his employer until 1948. This company was designing and selling pre-fabricated, steel-framed buildings, and Hurd was involved with both the farm building and house lines.

Hurd next worked for the Toledo-based architectural firm of Britsch and Munger. He (from 1949 until 1955, designed a variety of new buildings and additions or renovations to existing structures throughout the area. Upon leaving Britsch and Munger Hurd worked for one year (1955 -1956) as architect for Thyer Homes, a company with an extensive line of pre-fabricated houses.

The last twelve years of Hurd’s career, including the year with Thyer Homes, were spent as a private architect working, with a few exceptions, in Clyde and the surrounding area. His major projects of this time include the Clyde swimming pool, the Clyde public library, the Clyde Christian Church, and several additions to York school. Throughout his career Hurd also worked on numerous smaller jobs designing additions or renovations to homes in the area. Hurd retired in 1967.

This collection contains a variety of elements pertaining to Hurd’s career. A major part of the material consists of plans or blue prints of the various projects with which he was involved. There is also an extensive amount of correspondence between Hurd and his clients or between Hurd and suppliers. The remainder of the collection includes Hurd’s original rough sketches, working drawings, and work diaries as well as manuals, forms, and product information brochures. The last box in the collection consists of miscellaneous material dealing with Hurd’s life as an architect. Such items as information regarding his registration in four states, his activities in the American Institute of Architects and the Architects Society of Ohio, and correspondence with manufacturers, suppliers, and others are included. An article Hurd wrote in 1952, entitled "Fifty Years of Toledo Architecture, A Survey of the Recent Past," is found here. And there is an extensive amount of information concerning Hurd’s short-lived tenure as editor of the Ohio Architect magazine, January-March, 1954.

This collection gives the researcher an additional insight into the character of Thaddeus B. Hurd. By reading his professional correspondence and studying his drawings the reader learns how seriously Hurd regarded his work as an architect and the deep sense of responsibility he felt in every aspect of his career. His attention to detail and meticulous record keeping are also noticed.

THADDEUS B. HURD - GENEALOGY & GENEALOGY CORRESPONDENCE

Hurd’s strong interest in local and family history led to extensive research of his ancestors, particularly the Hurd family. Hurd traveled to New England and New York, searching county and town records, recording tombstone inscriptions, and photographing and visiting many sites where his ancestors had lived. A thorough and accurate researcher, Hurd’s voluminous research notes, documentation, and correspondence on his Hurd, Rhoades, Tripp, and Baker families appear in Boxes 18 through 39. Family bibles and photographs, photocopies, and handwritten transcriptions of burial records, census records, deeds, and wills and estates are included. Hurd created charts, maps, and family group sheets on each of these lines. Box 18 contains the bulk of the material on the Rhoades, Tripp, and Baker families, while Boxes 23 and 24 contain correspondence with other Hurd researchers regarding his direct line Hurd ancestors. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the correspondent. Box 26 contains Hurd’s research notes at various institutions. Published material about Hurd ancestors appears in Box 27. Mr. Hurd was especially interested in correcting Hurd genealogical errors that appeared in print. This material is included in Box 27 also. As Hurd’s knowledge of the family lines grew, interested researchers frequently wrote him for information and documentation on their own Hurd ancestors. Boxes 28 through 39 contain extensive genealogical correspondence with Hurd researchers not of his own family line. The material is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the correspondent.

THADDEUS B. HURD - CLYDE, OH - HISTORY, ETC.

Thaddeus Hurd was instrumental in founding the Clyde Heritage League in 1975. The non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving the history of Clyde, Ohio. One of the organization’s most important projects was the acquisition, preservation, and restoration of the old Clyde village hall on South Main Street in Clyde. Funded by grants from the city of Clyde, Whirlpool Foundation, the Commission on Aging, and individual donations, the hall was renovated and dedicated in 1983 as a community center and the Clyde Senior Center. Boxes 40 and 41 contain correspondence, documents, and records related to this project, while Box 42 contains Clyde city government records reports, and publications from approximately 1960 to 1984.

Boxes 44, 45, 47, 48, and 49 contain Hurd’s research materials on Clyde local history. The material is arranged by subject: Businesses and Celebrations, Early History, Famous People, Families and Genealogy, Military and Education, and Newspapers, Publications, and Art. Hurd researched and compiled information on many of the topics. As interest grew in Clyde’s past, residents frequently provided additional information and oral history. Box 48, Clyde, Ohio Families and Kintracers, is Hurd’s research on some of Clyde’s families. It is arranged alphabetically by the family surname. Photocopies of the material have been bound in three volumes and entitled Clyde Ohio Families. The volumes have been cataloged and placed in the Hayes Presidential Center’s reading room. Also noteworthy is the information on "Storytown,"contained in Box 43. "Storytown" was a video about Sherwood Anderson, his book, Winesburg, Ohio, and its connections to Clyde. Hurd wrote and produced the video for bus tours visiting Clyde and the Winesburg Inn, a restaurant that was located on U. S. Route 20 at Clyde.

THADDEUS B. HURD - SANDUSKY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In 1957, Thaddeus Hurd became the driving force behind the revitalization of the Sandusky County Historical Society (founded 1874). Members’ interest had waned during the depression of the 1930's. In 1966, Hurd and other community activists reorganized the society to reflect the changing needs and interests in local history. Although a major function of the organization had been the socialization of members, the mission became educationally-oriented after 1966. To fulfill its mission, the society undertook a variety of new programs and activities: a newsletter, historic programming, exhibits, historical markers, lectures, cemetery research, and genealogical research of Sandusky County families. Genealogy research eventually became a division of the society, known as the Sandusky County Kinhunters .

Mr. Hurd, serving as the organization’s president from 1965 through 1969, performed or spearheaded many of the activities through 1979. The material associated with his activities may be found in Boxes 52 through 69. The bulk of the Sandusky County Historical Society material is genealogical research conducted on behalf of those seeking information on their Sandusky County families. Hurd undertook genealogical research as part of the duties of the genealogical supervisor of the Sandusky County Kinhunters division. His research correspondence on individual Sandusky County families was at times extensive. Arranged alphabetically by family surname, the correspondence may be found in Boxes 60 through 67 In some cases, the surnames of collateral families discussed in the correspondence appear in parentheses. Boxes 58 and 59 contain material related to other Sandusky County Kinhunter activities. Included are copies of the "Kinhunter Guides" created by Hurd to help educate new genealogists, minutes, forms, publicity, publication sales, and lectures on genealogical research.

Box 52 contains records of the Sandusky County Historical Society, dating from 1963 to 1989. They include minutes, membership lists, presidents’ and directors’ correspondence, publicity, programming, and financial information. Box 53 and much of Box 54 are devoted to historical publications either produced or reprinted by the organization. Boxes 56 and 57 and Boxes 68 and 69 contain material generated from specific projects undertaken by the society: Box 56 - Historical Markers; Box 57 - The Battle of Fort Stephenson during the War of 1812; and Boxes 68 and 69 - Sandusky County Cemeteries.

THADDEUS B. HURD - SHERWOOD ANDERSON

Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden, Ohio, the son of Irwing McClain Anderson. The family later moved to Clyde, Ohio. With little education and financial support, Anderson left Clyde after the death of his mother. He married Cornelia Platt Lane of Toledo, Ohio, and was the father of three children. He succeeded in advertising and the mail-order business. By 1907, he was president of his own company. Anderson entered what has become a legendary mid-life crisis in 1912. He left his wife and family and moved to Chicago the following year. His first novel, Windy McPherson’s Son (1916), was highly-acclaimed. His best and most famous work, Winesburg, Ohio, is a collection of stories about the condition of contemporary middle-class American culture. Anderson continued to write essays, short stories, novels, nonfiction, and journalistic pieces until his death in 1941. Anderson used writing as a tool to openly explore the lives of middle class men. He was generous to greater writers such as Hemingway and Faulkner, who succeeded him and were influenced by his style and subject matter.

The Anderson material is primarily composed of Hurd’s correspondence and research notes on the life, work, and family of Sherwood Anderson. Boxes 70 and 71 include correspondence with Anderson relatives and others interested in Anderson, including editors of Anderson’s work, and correspondence. Boxes 72 and 73 include Hurd’s local research and writings on Anderson, his family, and film proposals (1974-1988). Box 74 contains information on festivals and publicity events featuring Anderson’s life and work.

THADDEUS B. HURD - GENERAL JAMES B. MCPHERSON

As one of the prominent historical figures of Clyde, Ohio, General James Birdseye McPherson became a major focus of Hurd’s research. Born in 1828 to one of Sandusky County’s pioneer families, McPherson received an appointment to the United States Military Academy where he graduated first in his class. Considered one of the brightest minds in the United States Army, McPherson received the army’s most coveted assignments, including the design and construction of Fortress Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. In the fall of 1861, McPherson returned East and joined the staff of General Ulysses S. Grant as chief engineer. McPherson rose to prominence as the 17th Corps commander of the Army of the Tennessee during the Civil War. A close friend of Grant and Sherman, McPherson was appointed Commander of the Army of the Tennessee in the spring of 1864. McPherson led the army in the Atlanta Campaign until his death on July 22, 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta. He is buried in the McPherson Cemetery in Clyde, Ohio. McPherson was the highest ranking Union officer killed in the Civil War.

Box 75 includes the research notes and manuscript material of Elizabeth Whaley, author of Forgotten Hero: General James B. McPherson, the only published work devoted to McPherson’s life. Box 76 contains Hurd’s biographical material on McPherson .
