Introduction

The Luella McGrady Fought Papers were donated to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in 2017.

 

Biographical Sketch

Luella McGrady Fought was born in Fremont, Ohio, August 21, 1888, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Lietzke McGrady. She married Albert Fought in 1937. Ms. Fought was a practical nurse for 32 years. She belonged to Sacred Heart Church where she was known as “Aunt Lu.” She was named “Woman of the Year” by the church in 1975 two weeks before her death. She visited 683 patients and shut-in in the area in 1974 and some 536 in 1975. Ms. Fought was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Rosary and the auxiliary of St. Francis of Oak Ridge in Green Springs, Ohio. She died at the age of 87 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery.

 

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two small tablets in which Ms. Fought recorded the names of the families and physicians she assisted in childbirth. She noted the name, date of birth, weight, and sex of each infant. Also given was the length of each stay and the amount of the payment received. The record begins in 1915 and extends to 1936. Most of the births occurred in Sandusky County, Ohio. Also included is information about ill patients cared for by Ms. Fought. The record of a 1925 trip to and from Florida; recipes; prescriptions; and treatments also appear.
