Biographical Sketch

Samuel Baker emigrated from New York during the winter of 1818, bringing with him five children to Green Creek Twp. Sandusky County, Ohio: Samuel, Sarah Ann (Brown); Almira (Grover); Samantha (Shields); and Amelia (Simpers). Samuel Baker, Jr., the eldest, was born in New York in 1802. He married Elizabeth Cleveland, daughter of Clark Cleveland in Sandusky County, Ohio in 1826. They were the parents of eight children.

Scope and Content

This collection spans the years from 1824 to 1938, however the bulk of the material is dated 1861 to 1866. It includes a United States land grant dated April 6, 1824 for Abner Aldrich of Ohio; an undated photograph of an unidentified man standing before what is thought by the donors to be the home of Samuel Baker. Also included is a ledger belonging to Samuel Baker, however, it is unclear if it was the ledger of Samuel Baker who emigrated from New York or his son, also named Samuel Baker. The first four pages of the ledger contain accounts, dating from 1861 to 1866 with individuals involving labor and purchases. The ledger also contains four pages recording purchases made by Baker during the years 1861 and 1862; cures and treatments for physical ailments and illnesses; and notes given and taken. Page 319 provides birth, death, and marriage dates for family members. The surnames include Hawk, Potter, and Short. The earliest date is given as 1840 and the most recent is 1938. Also included in the ledger are facts recorded in 1888 regarding United States history and presidents. The handwriting appears to be different than that of the individual who recorded accounts, notes, and purchase from 1861 to 1866.
